Getting Killed

Geese

"A masterpiece belongs to the dead There are microphones under your bed and there's footage that will prove us both wrong"

11 Tracked / 46 Minutes

It’s apt that, as writing this, I’m on the second to last track, probably my song of the year if we’re being honest, of this album. Look, Geese aren’t for everyone, at least Getting Killed front to back might not be. However, I can near guarantee that, at the very least, there’s at least one song from the tracklist that everyone reading this would enjoy.

They’re new(ish), finally getting the recognition and praise they deserve and are creating some extremely bold sounding music, filling the rather bloated space with something truly unique.

The Crux

DJO

"Somethin' special’s happening You stop to think it's all but over Maybe head games aren't for free And confidence ain't overbearing, no"

12 Tracks | 45 Minutes

Yeah sure, it’s Joe Keery (aka Steve from Stranger Things) and yeah sure, he had an absolute sleeper hit with ‘End of Beginning’ recently and yeah sure, this album is very obviously a picking of his favourite existing sounds, styles and musicians, but it works, and for his third album, it feels to me, by far the most cohesive.

The opening 5 tracks are an unbelievable run of bops and, listening in Dolby Atmos, the sheer amount of elements going on in some of these tracks is masterful. Who cares if he’s leaning on artists of the past for inspiration when it sounds this good and it’s this catchy.

Virgin

Lorde

"There's broken blood in me, it passed through my mother from her mother down to me"

11 Tracks | 35 Minutes

Some may say a return to form, I’d say a continuation of brilliance from easily one of the most talented modern pop stars of our generation. I loved Solar Power (despite general disliking amongst popular culture) but my gosh does this album hit you like, hmm, a hammer dare I say?

It’s sound is something Lorde has toyed with before but never to this gritty, bass heavy, distorted level before. That’s mainly thanks to Jim-E Stack on production (his solo work is great, listen if you like this) but Lorde, as she always does, lays everything so bare you feel like you’re intruding, all before you’re whisked away with the most alternative yet catchy hooks and vibes.

Forever Howlong

Black Country, New Road

"Over-done routine, the man reaches down to pick up the shit I make eye contact with the dog We both look away"

11 Tracks | 52 Minutes

After the departure of their lead singer, I wasn’t sure I’d ever quite connect with BCNR again. I was so happy to be wrong, and despite not really feeling the singles on this project, BCNR are truly a band you just need to stick to album listening on in my opinion.

Grand, is the best way I can describe their sound, mixed with absolutely perfected chaos. It’s rare that a sound like this actually succeeds but I, like Geese, truly think there could be a song on here for everyone. They conjure such vivid imagery with their lyrics and, the way they go about their writing structure, it’s just so unique.
